The Young Feminist Wire in collaboration with AWID’s Membership & Constituency Engagement team is excited to be hosting a ‘Guests on the Wire’ session featuring ‘Young Lakota’: a feature documentary directed by Marion Lipschutz and Rose Rosenblatt, executive produced by Heather Rae, airing on PBS’s Independent Lens in November 2013.
Young Lakota sheds light on the fight of pro-abortion activists in the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota against the state’s potential law to ban abortion in South Dakota including during instances of rape and incest. The struggle against this law and the push to open up a women’s health center is exposed through following the lives of Sunny and Serena, a young man and woman deeply involved in the social political climate of the Lakota people of the reservation eager to make a change in their community. The documentary contextualizes this struggle within the local context of the tribal elections at the reservation and touching on issues of racism, violence, and poverty that the Lakota people face.
The Guests on the Wire session will offer participants exclusive access to the film a few days prior to the session. The film is 80 minutes long and participants will be asked to watch the film prior to attending the session. The session, which will be held on October 17th from 9-11 AM EST, will bring to the panel the producers and directors of the documentary, Marion Lipschutz and Rose Rosenblatt, alongside the protagonists featured in the film, Sunny and Serena, for in-depth discussion of the issues the documentary touches on.
